What Is Magnetic Track Lighting? A Complete Guide
The modular lighting system taking over Singapore renovations. Here's what it is and why it works.
Magnetic track in 30 seconds
A low-voltage rail is installed in or on your ceiling. Lighting modules snap onto the rail magnetically. You can slide them along the track, swap them out, or add more, all without tools or an electrician. The track provides both power and mounting in one system.
How it works
The track runs on 48V DC (converted from mains 240V by a driver hidden in the ceiling void). Inside the track is a magnetic rail with power contacts. Each light module has magnets and spring-loaded contact pins on its back. Push the module against the track and it clicks into place, drawing power instantly. Pull it off and it releases cleanly.

Why 48V matters
48V DC is classified as Safety Extra-Low Voltage (SELV). It cannot cause electric shock under normal conditions. This means you can safely handle the track and modules with the power on, with no need to kill the circuit before rearranging your lights. This is what makes the snap-on, snap-off concept genuinely practical rather than just a gimmick.
Types of modules
Spotlights: directional accent lighting, adjustable angle. Flood bars: linear modules that wash light across a wider area. Pendant adapters: hang a decorative pendant from the magnetic track. Grille lights: anti-glare modules with recessed LEDs. The variety means a single track can serve multiple lighting functions in one room.

Installation options
Recessed: the track sits flush inside a channel cut into the false ceiling. The cleanest look. Surface-mounted: the track attaches to the ceiling face with brackets. No false ceiling needed. Suspended: the track hangs from the ceiling on cables. Works with high ceilings or when you want the track lower than the ceiling plane.
Why it's popular in Singapore
Magnetic track has exploded in popularity in Singapore renovations over the past few years. The modular flexibility appeals to homeowners who want control over their lighting without committing to fixed positions. Interior designers like it because they can specify one system that handles spots, floods, and pendants. And the clean, linear aesthetic fits the modern minimalist look that dominates Singapore interior design right now.

Things to consider
Track length is limited by the driver's wattage capacity, so longer runs or more modules need a higher-rated driver. Not all magnetic track brands are interchangeable; modules from one manufacturer may not fit another's track. Stick to one system. The driver needs to be accessible for maintenance, so plan its location in the ceiling void. And while the modules are easy to reposition, the track itself is fixed, so plan the track layout carefully during renovation.
